vitamin C

  1. Feds REFUSE to acknowledge this world-renowned ‘essential medicine’!

You’ve been sold out, my friend.

And I bet you didn’t even notice it!

The FDA quietly… secretly… and sneakily published its list of “essential” medications… or the treatments that are “are medically necessary to have available at all times” at hospitals and other care facilities.

This isn’t just an FYI for docs. It also serves as a shopping list… since the U.S. government will buy, buy, buy, buy everything on it.

With money like that on the line, you can guess what happened next.

The list became less about the TRUE essentials

And more about PAYING BACK their corporate pals with big-time purchase orders.

If you don’t have a powerful corporate lobby behind you, you don’t make the cut… which is likely why one of the most essential medicines in the world ISN’T on the list.

That could lead to needless suffering and death in Americans hospitals, every single day!

IGNORED vitamin could be CRUCIAL to recovery

When I say this item the FDA just ignored is “essential,” I’m not talking about my lonely old opinion.

This one is on the BIG LIST.

It’s on the World Health Organization’s list of essentials… meaning WHO believes every hospital, clinic, and practice in the world needs to have this on hand.

It’s ascorbic acid -- better known as plain ol’ vitamin C!

Of course, it’s essential to the human body… and we ALL know we need it…

But even the World Health Organization’s list of what this nutrient can do barely SCRATCHES the surface.

Because at ultra-high levels… mega doses you can only get intravenously… vitamin C can do something almost no drug in the world can promise.

It can KNOCK OUT some of the world’s DEADLIEST infections!

What could possibly be more essential than that???

Multiple studies have found that C combined with hydrocortisone and thiamin can save the lives of patients in septic shock. It works by calming the “cytokine storms” that overwhelm the system and lead to the rapid decline and death that often marks the condition.

Every year, more than 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis… and some 270,000 die from it. This is a complication that nearly EVERY hospital in the nation sees, every day, often multiple times a day.

Yet the FDA won’t put the most promising treatment we have for sepsis on its “essentials” list.

    What a scam!

That’s not ALL it does, by the way.

In a 2018 study, intravenous C led to better recovery… and a higher chance of survival… in patients with SEVERE pneumonia.

There are dozens of other uses for IVC, such as fighting off other forms of infection… and even as a cancer treatment (especially to fight the side effects of chemo).

Yet the FDA’s decision means patients could be SHUT OUT.

But don’t let that stop you from REQUESTING it!

If the chips are down… if you or a loved one are hospitalized with severe infection… or if you’re fighting cancer…

I’m not saying you should REJECT whatever else is being offered.

But ASK for intravenous vitamin C alongside it. Most docs will comply… thinking that at the very least it won’t hurt.

When you recover, they’ll think it was the OTHER stuff they did for you.

Let them think that. You’ll know the truth about this “essential” therapy!

    In Your Corner,

    Dr. Allan Spreen

  2. Don't forget your supplements this holiday season

My "prescription" for a Merry Christmas

With just five days until Christmas...and the shopping season in full swing...I think it's high time I offer up a bit of my best holiday advice. But don't worry, my "prescription" is a simple one: slow down, take a deep breath, and for goodness sake lighten up!

    Yup, that's it.

It's so easy to get caught up in the chaos that sometimes we need to be reminded to just relax and enjoy this wonderful time of year. And let's face it, running at full steam for weeks on end, worrying about finding "the perfect gift," and stressing about family and work obligations can set you up for a crash right in the middle of cold and flu season.

So take some time out to enjoy the lights. Watch a sappy Christmas movie. Or just take a nap. And if anyone questions you just say, "Hey, it's doctor's orders!"

And while you're at it don't forget to take your vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and garlic to help shore up your immune system before you go visiting family and friends. (You'll find lot's more immune-building advice in the Guide to Good Health archives here.)
Oh, and one last thing. Don't fret about having that Christmas cookie or an extra glass of holiday cheer. It's Christmas after all, and an occasional holiday indulgence never hurt anyone.

I wish you a happy, healthy, and very merry Christmas!

  3. 2 key antioxidants help battle breast cancer and may stop it returning

I remember when a friend of mine got cancer, her oncologist told her to stop taking vitamins. They might protect the cancer cells and get in the way of your treatment, he warned. But that‘s a bunch of baloney. Take your vitamins, especially if you‘re battling breast cancer. A recent study found that women with breast cancer who took two key antioxidants following their diagnosis significantly cut their risk of recurrence. For this study, researchers recruited about 5,000 women with invasive breast cancer. About six months after surgery, the women answered questions about their vitamin usage. Then, the researchers followed the women over the next four years. Here‘s what they found... Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 532 of the women. But the women who took two key antioxidants during the first six months following their diagnosis slashed their recurrence risk. In fact, women who used vitamin C for more than three months had a 38 percent lower risk of recurrence. Plus, they had a 44 percent lower mortality risk (compared to those who didn‘t use the vitamin). The benefits for taking vitamin E were even greater. Researchers found that women who took vitamin E for three months or more reduced their recurrence risk by 48 percent. Plus, they reduced their mortality risk by 43 percent compared to non- vitamin takers. According to the study‘s authors: "There is a widespread concern that the use of antioxidant supplements during cancer treatment may protect tumor cells from the oxidative damage induced by cancer therapies, thereby reducing the effectiveness of treatment and increasing risk of mortality. We found no evidence that vitamin use during the first six months following diagnosis had a detrimental effect on breast cancer outcomes." That‘s putting it lightly. I‘d say a 38 to 48 percent reduction in recurrence rates is huge news! Every oncologist should give these antioxidants to their breast cancer patients. But it will never happen. Most oncologists only want to tell you about drugs. Drugs like Avastin. Avastin is mainly used to treat lung and colon cancer. But the FDA approved its use for breast cancer back in 2008 based on evidence that it could add up to five months to a woman‘s lifespan. It works by cutting off the supply of blood vessels to a tumor. But since 2008, study after study has shown that Avastin does not extend the lifespan of a woman battling metastic breast cancer. Yet oncologists, Big Pharma, and patients groups want to keep it on the market. Tragically, this may do more harm than good. The FDA will make the call about Avastin‘s sometime in June. I‘ll keep you posted. But in the meantime, if you want to keep cancer out of your life for good, keep taking your vitamin C and vitamin E.
  4. Benefits of vitamin C—happier hospital stays

Ideally, you'll never have to spend even a single night in a hospital bed. But if you happen to wind up there, even if it's just for one night, make sure to take along your vitamins. One vitamin in particular--required for tissue repair in the body--is a MUST. Plus, a new study shows that this vitamin may also help keep your mood afloat during your hospital stay. Of course, I'm talking about the almighty vitamin C. You see, vitamin C is the essential vitamin REQUIRED for all new growth or repair in the body. In fact, it boosts collagen production. And collagen is the main protein responsible for repair in the body. It repairs your tissues, tendons, bones, muscles, organs and even your brain. Want your post-op scar to heal faster? Make sure you've got plenty of vitamin C...because without it, your body can't repair anything. Secondly, vitamin C is critical to your immune system. It boosts the production of interferon, a protein that helps shut down the growth and spread of bacteria, viruses, or tumors. And it's exactly what you need to have in abundance when you're entering the hospital and fighting infection at every turn. Thirdly, as it turns out, vitamin C makes for a happier hospital stay. That's what surgeons from Montreal's Jewish Medical Hospital just discovered. Can more vitamin C make you happier? Canadian physicians selected 32 hospital patients to take part in this study. (Granted, that's a miniscule number. But for a hospital to dispense anything other than Percocet or Prilosec, it's a pretty big deal and essentially unheard of in 2010!) First off, the doctors divided the patients into two groups. One group would receive 500 mg of vitamin C twice a day for up to 10 days. The other group would receive 1,000 IU of vitamin D (as a placebo) twice a day for up to 10 days. The doctors also measured blood levels of vitamin C before and after treatment. Unfortunately, they found that 60 percent of the patients were vitamin C deficient at the study's outset. Next, the doctors asked their patients to answer questionnaires about their mood before vitamin treatment began and after at least five days of taking the vitamins. Here's what they found:
    • First off, in the group taking vitamin C, their blood levels of vitamin C more than tripled.
    • In addition, the vitamin C group experienced a 34 percent average reduction in mood disturbance.
    • In the vitamin D patients, their blood serum levels of D rose as well.
    • But the vitamin D patients experienced no improvement in mood.
Clearly, vitamin C gave patients a nice boost in mood during their stay. In their report, the doctors didn't make any guesses why the vitamin C group fared so much better. But I've got an explanation: Vitamin C makes everything better. You see, when you're under stress--physical or mental (such as during a hospital stay)--your body's need for vitamin C increases exponentially. In addition, inflammation following surgery or illness depletes your body's absorption of vitamin C. So by giving your body more of what it needs, you heal faster and you're happier. Add vitamin C to the top of your "To Pack" list There's no doubt vitamin C will help you recover from any hospital visit. Not only will it boost your mood, but it will also help you thwart infection. And we all know that's a huge concern even in the best hospitals. Plus, vitamin C helps flush out any drugs or anesthesia you may have received during your hospital stay. Bottom line? Prevent potential problems and supplement with extra vitamin C before you enter the hospital. And definitely pack a bottle of it during your hospital stay. Just don't count on your nurse to add it to your little cup of pills. In fact, you may have to sneak it in between hospital rounds. (I've done that a few times myself!) If you're recovering from an illness or preparing surgery, take 1,000 mg of C three times a day. That's quite a bit more than the Canadians used in their study. But if you're recovering from an illness or surgery, you'll need it. It's essential as your body repairs itself and returns to optimal health. Plus, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, so any extra your body doesn't need will get flushed. For normal vitamin C maintenance, take 1,000 mg of C twice a day. But don't go for time-released preparations as these are a waste of money. Vitamin C only stays in your body for a few hours at a time.
  5. Vitamin C for Henry VIII

Now we know that poor old Henry VIII should have been taking his vitamin C. It just may have prevented him from getting gout. Gout is a form of arthritis. Men are most commonly afflicted. It was very common during the late 1800s, but it’s now making a comeback, probably due to a rise in known risk factors among men in our culture. These risk factors include: obesity, high alcohol intake, and a diet high in red meat. Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine studied 47,000 male health care professionals for 20 years. They found that men who took 1,000 to 1,499 mg of vitamin C daily had a 34 percent decreased risk of suffering from gout than men who took no vitamin C. Plus -- men who took 1,500 mg or more per day of this super vitamin had a 45% lower risk of getting the disease. But if you take enough vitamin C, you probably won‘t ever suffer from gout. As a reminder, I urge even the healthiest of individuals get at the very minimum 2,000 mg (1,000 mg 2x daily) of vitamin C. Great news for you. Too late for Henry.
