Suffolk County, NY takes stand against BPA plastics
2009-04-09

Back in October, I wrote about Bisphenol-a (or BPA). It’s a kind of plastic found in some types of baby bottles, sippy cups, and the lining of aluminum cans. Many of us in the medical community worry that BPA can leach into foods and beverages, causing much harm.

Though the FDA and EPA say BPA isn’t a problem, there are many studies dating back to the 1930s that suggest otherwise.

Much recent research on animals and humans suggest that BPA mimics some of the effects of the hormone estrogen. Plus—high BPA levels in the body are associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer.

In addition, a recent study by the Yale School of Medicine proved that BPA can cause neurological problems in animals. The subjects were injected with BPA equal to the EPA’s “maximum safe dosage” of 50 µg/kg/day. The researchers found a connection between BPA and disruptions in the brain cells linked to memory, learning and mood.

Still other studies suggest a connection between BPA exposure and obesity.

Well, I’ve got some good news to report after that laundry list of bad news!

On April 2, 2009, Suffolk County, New York banned the sale of baby bottles and sippy cups containing BPA. I’m not exactly sure how this small county in Long Island plans to control the sale of these types of products in their community, but it’s an exciting first step.

Plus, as of the writing of this article, several states (including California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii) are considering banning BPA products.

In the meantime, keep a keen eye when shopping for bottles or sippy cups for the little tykes in your life. Many products—if they are BPA free—now advertise it right on the packaging.
